The Project
About BRAVE
Initially focusing primarily on Lassa fever and mpox, BRAVE uses standardised methods, comprehensive linked health datasets, active surveillance studies and culturally-sensitive engagement strategies to generate robust background rates of Adverse Events of Special Interest (AESI) to support effective safety monitoring.
BRAVE will also develop innovative methodologies for rapid outbreak response, build capacity for high-quality real-world data collection and analysis, and promote sustainable evaluation capability. This infrastructure can also be used for assessing vaccine effectiveness, supporting risk benefit assessment.
BRAVE connects directly to CEPI’s 100 Days Mission, a global drive to develop safe, effective and globally accessible vaccines within 100 days of identifying a new disease threat. By combining Africa’s growing research and regulatory capacity with CEPI’s rapid response ambition and GVDN’s post-vaccination surveillance, countries can move faster from innovation to protection, strengthening regional and global health security.

BRAVE is delivered collaboratively by GVDN’s Global Coordinating Centre with its network partner institutions across six African countries.
Who we are
BRAVE’s network partner institutions include: the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, Navrongo Health Research Centre in Ghana, the International Foundation Against Infectious Diseases in Nigeria, Eagle Research Centre in Rwanda, KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme in Kenya and University of Kinshasa in Democratic Republic Congo.
GVDN is a collaboration of vaccine safety and effectiveness experts coordinated by the Network’s Global Coordinating Centre, based in New Zealand. Established in 2019, GVDN is a multinational, investigator-led research network advancing and building capacity in vaccine safety and effectiveness science in more than 30 countries, including low and middle-income countries.
